Halos and glare can be noticed after cataract surgery, particularly around headlights or other bright lights. They may improve as the eye adapts and heals, but the experience varies among patients.
Why can halos occur?
Optical symptoms can be influenced by the IOL design, pupil size, ocular surface, residual refractive error, and the visual environment.
Which IOLs are associated with more optical phenomena?
Multifocal and some other advanced-technology lenses can produce halos or glare in some patients because of how light is distributed. This does not mean every patient will experience bothersome symptoms.
Can halos improve?
Some patients adapt over time. Treatable contributors such as dry eye or residual refractive error may also be addressed when appropriate.
When should you call your surgeon?
New or worsening vision loss, significant pain, marked redness, or other sudden changes are different from routine optical symptoms and should be reported promptly.
