How Long Do Cataract Surgery Results Last?

Cataract surgery removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens. The implanted IOL is intended to remain in the eye long term.

Can the cataract return?

The natural lens that developed the cataract is removed, so the original cataract does not grow back. Clouding of the capsule behind the IOL can occur later and is called posterior capsule opacification.

Can vision change years later?

Yes. Vision can change because of normal aging, dry eye, retinal disease, glaucoma, corneal changes, refractive changes, or other eye conditions.
