When Can I Exercise After Cataract Surgery?

Returning to exercise after cataract surgery depends on the procedure, your healing, and your surgeon’s instructions. Light activity may resume relatively quickly for many patients, while strenuous activity may require more time.

Walking

Gentle walking is often easier to resume than strenuous exercise. Follow your surgeon’s specific instructions.

Weight lifting and strenuous workouts

Heavy lifting and intense exercise can be restricted during early healing. Ask your surgeon when your usual workout is appropriate.

Swimming

Swimming and hot tubs may need to be avoided until the eye has healed sufficiently because water can expose a healing eye to contaminants.

Sports

Activities with a risk of being struck in the eye deserve particular caution. Protective eyewear may be appropriate for some sports.
